Camera-Critters #31
Saturday, November 8, 2008
Last weekend, when I went out to the mailbox, I noticed something move near some trees down the road. Yes, I notice things like that - different colors, slight movements, sudden sounds, etc. Anyway, I started down the road to investigate. What? Yes, of course I have my camera around my neck when I go check the mail! You don't? Anyway, this is what I saw...
A Groundhog, a.k.a. Woodchuck
Believe it or not, I don't see many groundhogs here in Missouri.
In Ohio, they were everywhere, and a big nuisance to farmers.

(c) Misty DawnSHere in Missouri, there are many, many coyote hunters.
It's a big thing.
In Ohio, groundhog hunting was a big thing.
Trust me, there's almost nothing as bad as
hitting a groundhog hole when you are driving a tractor
through the field with a full trailer load of hay attached to it.
Been there, done that - you just close your eyes and pray
that all the bales don't go toppling over! (UGH, bad memories)
(c) Misty DawnSYep, I like seeing them out here, because they aren't as plentiful.
Back home, however, these critters were not a welcomed sight,
right along with the humans who would
decide to use our fields for practice and scatter the field with golf balls.

wow very interesting pose and they are usually on the ground. Never saw one in a tree like that before. Great capture, see you never know when it will be handy to have your camera!

Misty: What do they call Buckeye Chuck in MO, Show Moe.
One to see one off the ground--I never have before!
I don't think I've ever seen one of these before. I guess I should pay more attention to all those little movements - and carry my camera when I go out to check the mail.
He is so adorable I think they are just the cutest.
What an interesting animal is this groundhog! Thanks for sharing! Thanks for the visit too. Have a nice weekend.
Wow he's huge!
Are they always this big or is this a well fed woodchuck? They are such busy animals seems like coz they just scurry around all the time.
I only hear about groundhogs on the news. Thank you for sharing. So fluffy looking.
So that's a groundhog. We just don't get them here.
Mr. Groundhog is kind of roly-poly isn't he? I don't think I've ever seen a groundhog in person before... great shots!
What great shots of the groundhogs!! I never knew they had another name a.k.a. "Woodchucks!" I enjoy siphoning your knowledge! You always have the Best posts and Blog!!
You lucky one could see it life ! I have never seen one, only on pictures !
He's cute. I bet he was hard to see from a distance.
Nice photo for CC.
Awww he's a cutie. Now that's another animal I've met! I have never seen a groundhog before and so the full meaning of films like "Groundhog Day" were completely lost on me, although I enjoyed the movie.
Great shots.
A groundhog? A real live groundhog? Too cool!
Great photo's!!
And thanks for making Camera Critters available for us to share photos.
Thank you for commenting on my blog.
Take care.
That little guy looks beefed up for winter.
So, a woodchuck and a groundhog is the same animal? Cool... I've never seen one...
We do have a lot of coyotes out here in the west, however... More and more of them recently around the fringes of the San Francisco Bay Area... Lots more wild turkeys than there used to be too...
